First of all, if you work for a family business, and you're an ‘outsider', I mean ‘not a member of the family circle', then you are unlikely to become a top manager or the CEO of the company no matter how hard you work ‘cause usually family businesses are reluctant to let outsiders into the top tier. And it's highly likely that they will appoint family members into roles that they do not have the skills or training for. So you risk being managed by someone who's not qualified to manage a team of employees. Sometimes family members aren't truly interested in joining the family business, but do so anyway because it's expected of them. As a result, you'll have an apathetic and unengaged manager.. Another disadvantage you may suffer from is family conflict. Conflict can arise in any business, but disputes within a family business can become personal, which is likely to have a negative effect on the success of the business and lead to a stressful working environment. Oh, and I can't help mentioning one more problem. Family ties may blind practical decision making. I mean family members may find it hard to take tough business decisions that will have a negative impact on another family member, or give them negative feedback about their performance when appropriate, which can make your work challenging.
