Well, I guess 'yes' but only if both parties are emotionally mature, transparent and honest, and are not willing to use or manipulate other people as pawns for their own benefit. I think such friendship can even be really beneficial for both a boss and an employee if they make some ground rules about their relationship, including the understanding that the boss needs to remain fair and just in their leadership and management, and can't show preferential treatment to this employee.
